International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (IDEVAW)

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (IDEVAW) is observed annually on November 25th to raise awareness and promote action to end violence against women and girls around the world. The day was first marked in 1981 by women's rights activists in honor of the Mirabal sisters, three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered in 1960 on the orders of the country's dictator, Rafael Trujillo.

👉  Social annoyance faced by the Women

Violence against women is a pervasive global problem that affects women and girls of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures. It takes many forms, including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, as well as trafficking, forced marriage, and harmful traditional practices.

IDEVAW is a global call to action to prevent and eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls, including physical, sexual, and psychological violence. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the resilience and strength of women and girls who have survived violence, and to honor those who have worked to end it.

    👉  IDEVAW: Historical Background

International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (IDEVAW) is the day to commemorate the brutal assassination of the Mirabal sisters, Patria, Minerva, and María Teresa, on November 25, 1960, by the Dominican Republic's dictator, Rafael Trujillo.

The Mirabal sisters were three political activists who opposed Trujillo's regime. They were tortured and murdered by his henchmen on November 25, 1960. Their deaths sparked outrage and protests around the world, and they became symbols of the fight against violence against women.

In 1981, advocates participating in the Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Encuentros designated November 25 as a day dedicated to addressing and increasing awareness about violence against women on a global scale. The United Nations (UN) officially recognized this date through a resolution on February 7, 2000.

    👉  IDEVAW 2023: Theme

This year's theme for IDEVAW is "Orange the World: End Violence against Women and Girls." Orange is the official color of the UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign, and It represents a future that is illuminated and devoid of violence.

IDEVAW is an opportunity to highlight the devastating consequences of violence against women and girls, and to call for urgent action to end it. Every day is a day to end violence against women and girls. Together, we can make a difference.
