Cyclone Michaung weakens; rainfall to several northward states after landfall

Andhra Pradesh:  The southern regions of Odisha were placed on high alert on Tuesday night due to the forecast of substantial rainfall following the landfall of severe cyclone Michaung in Andhra Pradesh.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Cyclonic 'Michaung' has weakened into a Deep Depression over Central Coastal Andhra Pradesh, situated approximately 100 km north-northwest of Bapatla and 50 km southeast of Khammam.

According to the latest update from the Met department, the system is expected to further lose intensity, transitioning into a Depression within the next six hours and eventually downgrading into a well-marked low-pressure system in the subsequent six hours.

The cyclonic storm made landfall on Tuesday afternoon near Bapatla, located between Nellore and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Its maximum impact was felt on Monday in Chennai and neighboring areas of Tamil Nadu.

The northern districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, experienced heavy rainfall, causing flooding on roads and disrupting normal life. At least 17 people lost their lives in rain-related incidents in Chennai, and the airport was closed on Monday due to a submerged runway, reopening at 9 am on Tuesday.

As the system progresses northwards, it is expected to bring rainfall to several states. The India Meteorological Department predicts isolated heavy rainfall over north coastal Andhra Pradesh on December 6, 2023.

Telangana is likely to experience heavy rainfall, with isolated heavy rainfall expected over south Chhattisgarh, south Coastal, and adjoining south Interior Odisha on the same day. The southern districts of Odisha remain on alert, anticipating an increase in rainfall intensity.

Koraput Collector Abdaal Akhtar assured that the current situation is normal, with precautions in place to mitigate potential incidents. There is a prediction of intensified rainfall in the next 24 hours. Additionally, Chhattisgarh and the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra are expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall today.
