The Wall Bureau (06 Feb 2023): At least 360 people have died after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck southern Turkey on Monday. According to the latest information, 516 people were injured. Several buildings collapsed. The tremors were so strong that they were felt in Syria, Lebanon and Cyprus. Several buildings also collapsed in northern Syria's Aleppo, officials said.

The first earthquake struck around 4:30 a.m. local time on Monday. Its epicenter was supposed to the north of the city of Gaziantep which is about 90 kilometers far away from the Syrian border. Tremors of the earthquake were felt as far away as Cairo. According to sources, there was a tremor for about 45 seconds over a large area. A few minutes later the vibration again. An earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale occurred just 10 kilometers below ground in central Turkey.

People were seen inside partially collapsed houses and on the streets crying for help. Muhib Kadaur, a doctor in the city of Atmad, told The Associated Press by phone that at least 110 people were killed in the quake. "We fear that hundreds of people may be killed. We are in great panic," Kadaur said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan tweeted that "we hope to gradually emerge from this disaster." About six aftershocks were felt after the earthquake. Interior Minister Suleiman Soylu has issued a ban on visiting affected homes. "Our priority is to rescue people trapped under the rubble of houses and take them to hospital," he said. At least 18 people died in the earthquake in Turkey and 13 in Syria, according to various official figures.

Hulusi Sahin, governor of Turkey's Malta province, said at least 130 houses had collapsed. The opposition Syrian Civil Defense in northwest Syria described the situation in rebel-held areas as dire. He said many people were buried under the rubble of collapsed houses.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Twitter that search and rescue teams were immediately sent to the affected area. Rescue operations have begun in earnest. Seeing the severity of the earthquake, rescuers estimate that the number of casualties will increase.
