ISRO XPoSat mission on Monday, January 1, 2024

Andhra Pradesh: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched its new satellite, the XPoSat, on Monday, January 1, 2024. This was the first mission of the year for ISRO and marked a significant milestone in its space exploration journey.

The XPoSat is a dedicated X-ray polarimetry mission aimed at studying the polarization of intense X-ray sources in extreme conditions. This will provide valuable insights into the behavior of black holes, neutron stars, and other celestial objects. The satellite was launched aboard the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C58 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

The launch was a success, and the XPoSat is now in its desired orbit. The satellite is expected to operate for five years, during which it will collect data on a variety of X-ray sources. This data will be used to improve our understanding of the universe and its most mysterious objects.

The satellite weighs about 55 kg.  It carries a payload of four X-ray telescopes and a polarimeter.  The telescopes will observe X-rays in the energy range of 2-80 keV. The polarimeter will measure the polarization of the X-rays, which will provide information about the magnetic fields of the X-ray sources.

The launch of the XPoSat is a major achievement for ISRO and demonstrates India's growing capabilities in space technology. It is also a testament to the organization's commitment to fundamental scientific research. The success of this mission is sure to inspire future generations of scientists and engineers to explore the cosmos further.
