Today, June 20, 2023, would have been Magdalena Abakanowicz's 93rd birthday. Google is celebrating her life and work with a special doodle. Abakanowicz was a Polish sculptor and fiber artist who is best known for her large-scale sculptures and installations. Her work often explored the human condition and the relationship between individuals and society.

Abakanowicz was born in Falenty, Poland, in 1930. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where she graduated in 1954. In the early 1960s, she began to experiment with weaving and other textile techniques. Her first Abakans, as these sculptures came to be known, were made of hemp or jute and were often headless and faceless. They were intended to evoke a sense of mystery and otherworldliness.

Abakanowicz's work has been exhibited all over the world, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. She was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 1986.

Abakanowicz passed away in 2017 at the age of 86. Her work continues to be admired by artists and art lovers around the world.

In addition to the Google doodle, there are several other ways to celebrate Magdalena Abakanowicz's birthday today. You can visit one of her many public art installations, such as Agora in Chicago or Birds of Knowledge of Good and Evil in Milwaukee. You can also watch a documentary about her life and work, such as Magdalena Abakanowicz: Sculptures of Human Existence. Or, simply take some time to appreciate her unique and powerful art
