Amidst a hopeful atmosphere, the day of July 14 witnessed the launch of Chandrayaan-3, a mission that captured the attention of many nations worldwide. With the promise of resolving past regrets and inspiring the nation, the countdown to the moon's conquest began. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) led the charge, monitoring every step of the way. But, how does Chandrayaan 3 find it's way to the Moon?

    👉  Chandrayaan-3 Successfully Navigates Earth's Orbit

    Following a successful launch from Sriharikota, Chandrayaan-3 seamlessly made its way into Earth's side orbit. This accomplishment marked a significant milestone, but the mission had only just begun.

    ISRO remained vigilant, carefully tracking Chandrayaan-3's trajectory. On July 25, the spacecraft executed a crucial orbit change, setting the stage for its next phase. On August 1, the Lander (Vikram) would gradually enter the Moon's gravitational orbit, bringing it one step closer to its ultimate destination.

    👉  How do the GPS systems work?

    A GPS (Global Positioning System) works by utilizing a network of satellites orbiting Earth. These satellites transmit signals that GPS receivers (like Smart phones, GPS Navigation Devices, GPS Sports Watches, In-Car GPS Systems etc.) on the ground pick up. The receivers triangulate signals from multiple satellites to determine the user's precise location, altitude, and speed. By calculating the time it takes for signals to travel from the satellites to the receiver, GPS can provide accurate positioning information anywhere on the planet. This technology enables navigation, tracking, and timing services, supporting a wide range of applications in various fields, from personal navigation devices to emergency response systems.

    👉  Chandrayaan-3's Advanced Navigation System

    To facilitate real-time tracking and ensure Chandrayaan-3's precise navigation, ISRO did not rely on GPS systems, as they do not function in space. Instead, the spacecraft was equipped with an array of star sensors. These specialized instruments allowed the craft to determine its direction in space, calculate its progress, and establish its course.

    The concept behind star sensors revolves around the fixed positions of stars and the sun. The pole star, or Meru Nakshatra, remains consistently located in the north, providing a reliable reference point for determining other directions. During the day, the spacecraft's sensors track the sun, while at night they align with the pole star, enabling accurate orientation and navigation.

    As of the current date, Chandrayaan-3 finds itself at a distance of 127,609 km from Earth, maintaining an orbit of 236 km. This invaluable information is continuously gathered through the star sensors, offering a comprehensive picture of the spacecraft's progress.

    👉  Upcoming journey of Chandrayaan-3

    According to ISRO, in the coming days, Chandrayaan-3's journey will proceed as follows:

    - On August 1, the craft will enter the lunar transfer trajectory, the path between Earth's and Moon's orbits, as it starts its journey towards the Moon.

    - By August 5, Chandrayaan-3 will achieve lunar orbit, marking its initial approach to the Moon.

    - Subsequently, on August 6, it will transition into the second lunar orbit.

    - On August 9 and August 14, the spacecraft will enter the third and fourth orbits, respectively.

    - Finally, on August 16, Chandrayaan-3 will enter its fifth and final lunar orbit.

    As the mission progresses, the propulsion module and lander module will separate from the main vehicle on August 17, paving the way for the next phase of the mission.

    Through the ingenious use of star sensor technology and careful planning, ISRO's Chandrayaan-3 is confidently forging ahead on its extraordinary lunar expedition. With every passing moment, the nation eagerly awaits the wealth of knowledge and achievements this mission will bring.
