Floods in Tamil Nadu, India: A devastating situation
The southern districts of Tamil Nadu, India, have been facing severe floods since December 15th, 2023, due to unprecedented heavy rainfall. The recent floods in Tamil Nadu, India, have been devastating, primarily affecting the southern districts of Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi.
The region received nearly 50 mm of rainfall in just two days, compared to the usual 2.5 mm for this time of year. This extreme downpour has caused rivers and lakes to overflow, leading to widespread flooding.
Houses, roads, bridges, and railway tracks are submerged, disrupting transportation and communication. Schools, colleges, and other institutions are closed. At least five people have reportedly died in the floods and related accidents. Thousands of people have been displaced from their homes and are currently taking refuge in relief camps. Standing crops have been damaged or destroyed, impacting the livelihoods of farmers.
The state government has declared a holiday in the affected districts and deployed the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams for rescue and relief operations. Relief camps have been set up to provide shelter and essential supplies to the affected population. Food and shelter are being provided to homeless families.
The continuous rainfall and overflowing water bodies pose challenges for rescue and relief efforts. Concerns remain about potential dam breaches and landslides. The weather department has predicted further rainfall in the coming days, raising concerns about renewed flooding.
As of today, December 21st, the rain has subsided in some areas, but the floodwaters are receding slowly. Some districts are still experiencing a critical situation.
