Coromandel Express Mishaps 2023

Baleshwar, Odisha: Rescue operations have already been completed in the Odisha train accident. So far 275 people had died in this accident. More than 900 were injured. The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi had visited the accident site. The railway department initially blamed the fault in the signaling system as the cause of Friday night's horrific accident.

A high-level inquiry committee has already been formed to investigate the incident.

The accident happened around 7 pm on 02 June 2023, Friday. The Chennai-bound Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express derailed in a horrific accident. The rear coaches of the Coromandel Express moved onto the third track after a collision with a freight car on a loop line. Meanwhile, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express coming from the opposite direction collided with the derailed coaches on the third line. In an instant, the wailing spread. Dead bodies were strewn across the railway line.

The accident of Coromandel Express left the entire country (India) in shock. Just hearing about this terrible accident is getting goosebumps. Ever since the accident, there has been confusion over the cause. The question was how were the three trains on the same line? Was this accident due to signal error? How did Coromandel rise on the freight car standing in the loop line? Were Coromandel and goods train in the same line? If Humsafar Express hit Coromandel, how had the Humsafar come so little damage? Why didn't the guard give the news immediately? Could the loco pilot stop Coromandel even if he got the news?

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Baleswar on Saturday to visit the incident site. She was angry about the role of railways in Coromandel accident. She complained, "The train had no anti-collision device. That's why such a terrible accident took place." She further said, "I have served as the Railway Minister for three years. But now it seems that there is no coordination within the railways. Let there be a proper investigation into how such a terrible incident took place.”

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent a message of condolence to Friday's tragic train accident. Railways have blamed fault in signaling system as the primary cause of the accident. According to the preliminary report of the Joint Inspection Committee, the tragic train accident was caused by a fault in the signaling system. Reports said that the Up Karmandal Express was signaled for the main line but the train entered the loop line, where the train derailed after hitting a standing freight car. At this time, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express coming from the opposite direction through the third line and collided with the derailed coaches.

Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi expressed her heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed in the train accident. Meanwhile, a statement from the Indian Railways said that a high-level inquiry has been launched to probe the cause of the train accident in Odisha, which will be headed by Railway's South East Circle Safety Commissioner AM Chowdhury.
