The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) under the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the new education policy. The National Education Policy 2020 was released on 29th July 2020 (Wednesday) after being approved by the Union Cabinet. The Education Policy, first formulated in 1986, was replaced by the New Education Policy, 2020 (NEP 2020) after a long 34 years.

    The National Education Policy (NEP) was first introduced in 1986, and it was successively revised in 1992 and 1998. The new National Education Policy 2020 is a welcome step towards restructuring the country's education system. It is a bold and ambitious policy that seeks to radically transform the education system over the next decade.

    NEP 2022 is a comprehensive policy covering all aspects of education from early childhood education to higher education and vocational training. It is an ambitious policy that seeks to transform India's education system and make it world-class.

    It outlines the government's vision for the education sector in India over the next ten years. The policy has been formulated after extensive discussions with various well educated experts including students, teachers, parents and the well-known experts in the field of education.

    The new National Education Policy emphasizes the individual needs of students. It aims to provide them access to a world-class education. The policy seeks to create a more flexible and adaptive education system that can meet the needs of students and the economy.

    Vocational education is part of the new education policy. Teaching process must be done through the mother tongue and regional languages ​​up to the 5th year of schooling. Vocational skill training will be included from 6th standard onwards.

    Vocational education has been included in the New Education Policy, 2020. Teaching method of vocational education must be provided with the students’ mother language or with the help of their regional languages.  And it will be done up to the 5 years of schooling. After that from 6th Standards Vocational Skill training will be included to the school syllabus.   

    👉 New Education Policy 2020: 5+3+3+4 Education System

    The New Education Policy 2020 has introduced a new 5+3+3+4 education structure, which will replace the existing 10+2 system. Under this framework, the first five years of primary education will be focused on primary education, followed by three years of preparatory schooling, three years of intermediate schooling and four years of secondary education.

    The new education system in India 2020 introduced a 5+3+3+4 education structure. The 5+3+3+4 education structure is a major change from the previous education system in India, which was a 10+2 system. In the new system, students will spend more time in school overall, but the number of years spent at each stage of education will decrease.

    Below are the details of the new education structure:

    👉 Foundation Stage (5 years)

    The foundation phase will include the first 5 years of a child's schooling. In the first 3 years of education, children will be taught in anganwadis, balvathikas or community-based nurseries.

    The other 2 years of school include multilevel, play/activity-based learning, during which they develop the basic skills and knowledge needed to learn.

    👉 Preparatory Stage (3 years)

    The preparatory phase will be between the ages of 8 and 11 and will focus on basic learning including developing basic literacy and numeracy skills among students. The preparatory phase will help students develop their understanding of various subject concepts.

    👉 Middle Stage (3 years)

    The middle stage will be from 11 to 14 years of age. At the middle level, students will be expected to develop core academic skills such as reading, writing and basic language skills. They will be expected to develop life skills such as teamwork, problem solving and critical thinking

    👉 Secondary Stage (4 years)

    Secondary stage will be between 14 to 18 years of age. At this stage, students will be expected to complete a core curriculum consisting of English, mathematics, science and social studies. In addition, they will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of electives, including languages, arts and vocational subjects.

    The secondary level aims to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to prepare them for further education or to enter the workforce.

    👉 Objectives of New Education Policy (NEP)

    The new education policy aims to provide international standard and equitable education to all children in India. The main objectives of the new education policy are as follows:

    • The policy emphasizes on providing quality and affordable education to all children aged 3-18 years

    • It emphasizes holistic and multidisciplinary education rather than traditional education system.

    • In this new education system 5+3+3+4 education structure will be introduced instead of the present 10+2 system.

    • Students will be tested on their skills of how well they retain the knowledge of the content from the book by solving practical problems.

    • Regional language, Hindi and English – these three languages ​​are recognized as medium of instruction in the new education system.

    • To make it easier for students to learn the regional language, instruction in the first five grades will be taught in the local vernacular instead of English.

    • The school curriculum in India has been updated to facilitate understanding of the core concepts of the new education system and vocational education.

    • In this new education system 5+3+3+4 education structure will be introduced instead of the present 10+2 system.

    • The policy focuses on the use of technology in education to make this new education system more accessible and effective.

    • It is a system where there is no distinction between rural and urban areas and all children have access to quality education.

    • The policy also emphasized imparting vocational and technical education to students so that they are better equipped to enter the workforce.

    • The new education policy will provide greater autonomy to higher education institutions and seek to promote academic mobility. As a result, both public and private universities will be governed by the same regulations.

    However, the new system, which is still being implemented, includes an emphasis on online learning, longer school hours and a move away from rote learning. This policy aims to change the traditional pattern of Indian education system to bring it at par with international educational standards.

    This new education system places special emphasis on imparting international standard education to all irrespective of economic and social background in India. This is an important step for the education system in India. This new education system will bring massive reforms and changes to the whole of India and all Indian citizens.
