    Reading Seen

    1. Read the poem and answer the following questions as directed:

    I love to see the shaking twigs

    Dance till the shut of eve,

    The sparrow on the cottage rig,

    Whose chirp would make believe

    That Spring was just now flirting by

    In Summer's lap with flowers to lie.

    I love to see the cottage smoke

    Curl upwards through the naked trees,

    The pigeons nestled round the cote

    On dull November days like these;

    The cock upon the dunghill crowing,

    The mill sails on the heath a-going.

    The feather from the Raven’s breast

    Falls on the stable lea,

    The acrons near the old crow's nest

    Fall pattering down the tree;

    The grunting pigs, that wait for all,

    Scramble and hurry where they fall.

    Reading unseen

    2. Read the following and answer the questions that follow:

    The largest animals in the world are, undoubtedly, the whales. They belong to a family of mammals known as cetaceans. Unlike fish, whales are warm-blooded animals. They can breathe in the air. And they give birth to their own children.

    Fin Whale

    Scientists believe they evolved from four-limbed terrestrial mammals, although they are now the most adapted for underwater life. It is difficult to study whales. Because they are long-lived, reproduce slowly and most of them are highly migratory. The Pacific gray whale, for example, migrates from Alaska to Mexico each year, traveling about 20,000 kilometers a year.

    Most whales live to approximately 40 years of age though others, such as the Fin, can live to be ninety. Bow-head Wales may be especially long lived.

    A. List the characteristics that differentiate Whales from the fish. Write in complete sentences.
